Many are asking why we chose the name LQ Farms for our equestrian facility. The short answer is, we designed our livestock brand after my grandfather Leonard Quito “LQ” Warren to carry on his love of the farming and ranching way of life that he has passed on to so many of us in the family. For those interested in the long answer and a little history, Leonard Quito Warren moved west to the area with his family when he was a young boy.
There is a story about the family crossing the Missouri River in a covered wagon and when the water got unknowingly too deep, they had to cut the horses loose from their harnesses to keep the horses from pulling the wagon down and the family with it. What a trying time that must have been, but they made it across and continued on to settle in the Midwest.
As a young man, LQ married Thelma Woodruff and over time they raised 7 children: Betty, Gerald, Larry, Gary, Gayle (my dad), Darrell, and Sherry. LQ and Thelma bought a farm near Vassar, KS in the early 1930s and unfortunately lost the farm to the bank during the Great Depression. That land is now part of Pomona Lake. After that LQ farmed and managed several large ranches in the area near Globe.
LQ also helped build highway 56 East of Overbrook using his teams of horses cutting down hills and clearing the land for the highway. Leonard passed on to the family his love of farming and ranching. I have heard that grandpa was quite a hand with horses and had some very nice working teams.
So to answer the question, “Why LQ Farms?”, the answer is quite simple. To honor and recognize LQ for his love of farming and ranching to be passed on to our family throughout generations to come.
